5 & A Dime (Greg Kantor) is no new kid when it comes to the music scene. His career started in 2009 when he was just a freshman in college. Realizing the Greek scene wasn’t for him he started making his first album while his friends were rushing: “I tried to rush a fraternity but it just wasn’t for me. So, while all of my friends were partying, I made an album and before I knew it I was playing my first show in Boston! By my junior year I was touring, playing the music I had, and having a blast! Now that I’m about to finish school, I promised myself that I would lock myself in a studio and get aggressive with some new stuff.” Fresh off his graduation**, Greg is holding true to his promises and has been producing some seriously killer material recently. If you aren’t following him on SoundCloud yet, I suggest you hurry up before you miss something!

A few weeks ago, Greg and I spoke about his experience thus far as a producer and what we can expect from him in the future. Read on to learn more about 5 & A Dime and his thoughts on things like nakedness while performing.

What’s your spirit animal?

A panda… or a cockapoo. I have a cockapoo and it’s funny because he’s exactly like me and all over the fucking place. He can be a pain in the ass and misunderstood, but after a while you start to love him and he’s really loyal. He just has a little too much energy *laughs*. I got him a at a puppy mill and he is so spoiled.

Most awkward experience during a show (you can either be performing or in the audience)?

Oh man, the most awkward thing to happen to me… One time I was in the middle of playing a show at Vanderbilt and some guy was backstage with a metal bar. I have no idea why he had it to begin with but he was swinging it around like a light saber and hit me over the head with it and knocked me out [mid-set]. I guess he freaked out and wanted to make sure I was okay but I just woke up to him shaking me so I upper cut him in the face. Really dramatic scene and of course the whole crowd watched as it happened. It ended up being fine though and we laughed it off and took some pictures at the end of the show.

Mixed drink or beer?

Beer. Purple Haze beer brewed by Abita is amazing, I got introduced to it while at a show and it’s awesome. It’s from Alabama and I think it’s infused with raspberries. I don’t know how they make it but you have to try it!

Would you rather play naked in front of 30 thousand people, or play in front of 100 thousand naked people?

Honestly? I would do either. I was at Bisco [last year] and the nakedness didn’t bother me at all. I don’t have a problem with being naked… my girlfriend might *laughs* … but yeah I have nothing to be embarrassed about.
