If you know me well, then you know some people call me Disco Drew. Maybe that’s cause I’ve got the funkiest moves on this side of the Mississippi — or maybe it’s because it listen to enough cheesy to music to deserve the title. It’s true , it’s true… I have a special place in my soul reserved for Disco music… specifically Nu Disco — it’s modern predecessor.

So, Drew… what is Disco exactly? How is it different from all of the other House music you listen to? Well, I’m glad you asked… and I could definitely hash out this answer for you — but I think it’s best handled by my boy Barry White who once explained that, “Disco deserved a better name [than just “House”], a beautiful name because it was a beautiful art form. It made the consumer beautiful. The consumer was the star.”

Musically, there’s definitely characteristics of Disco (a “four-on-the-floor” beat, an eighth note (quaver) or 16th note (semi-quaver) hi-hat pattern with an open hi-hat on the off-beat, and a prominent, syncopated electric bass line)  — but the essence of Disco is how it makes you feel, not what it sounds like. Remember, like Barry said, you’re the star… not the producer/DJ.

Barry’s sentiment about the consumer being the star is the perfect fit for Disco because while the music can be cheesy, and the people can be ridiculous, the point is that — for tonight — it’s not about banging techno or the hottest Tech House track in Ibiza (or rock music in the 1970s and 80s) — it’s about YOUIt’s about having fun and enjoying yourself and the people around you. THAT, my friend, is Disco :).

Another quote about  Disco that tickles my fancy comes from Giorgio Moroder, hands down the most famous Disco producer EVER. Go look at the producers on Donna Summer’s Greatest Hits Album if you don’t believe me:

“Disco is music for dancing, and people will always want to dance.”

Thank you Giorgio — wise words, from a wise man.

Now do what the old man says and get your dancing shoes ready… ’cause it’s time to BOOGIE!!!
