For Memorial Day this year, I ventured home to my parent’s house in Cumberland, Maine. My friends Katie and Megan joined me for a whirlwind weekend of touring my favorite spots and a family style dinner with my parents in the backyard tea house. The tea house actually used to be the pool house before my parents filled it in. Looking for a little oasis, my mom decided to make it her project and transformed the lackluster shed into a bright, colorful entertaining space! I’m so glad that she did because it’s become a favorite retreat when I can beat my dad to it!

Maine is known as “Vacationland” to most, but I like to refer to it as “the way life should be.” I grew up there after all, and that’s how I really feel life should be: relaxed, calm, slower, and pristine. I love the bustling excitement of the city but I miss waving to strangers and warm conversations with fellow shoppers in a store.

Taking that phrase into account, Katie, Megan and I cooked a leisurely dinner to kick off the official start of summer. Our menu included: corn on the cob, grilled asparagus, kabobs (beef and chicken), watermelon and feta salad, potato salad, and of course cheese and wine. We ate and drank merrily, laughed heartily, and ended our meal with full bellies and hearts. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend my Memorial Day weekend.
