Recently, I took a road trip to Garden of The Gods with renowned yoga teacher and talented creative, Alba Avella for a photoshoot. A few months ago, we connected through the powers of social media and have been building a friendship since. What I love about Alba is that we can sit in the car for hours together and instead of running out of things to talk about, our conversations just build at a rapid rate and the next thing I know I’m riding on this ridiculous high and all I want to do is crush work and fuck shit up. Those are the types of people you want in your life, you know?

One of our conversation topics today was the power of authenticity and vulnerability. To be transparent, I’ve absolutely said out loud that I’m sick of people preaching the “power of authenticity.” It’s become cliche and overused. But here’s the thing: I actually believe in the notion whole-heartedly, I just wish that people would take action instead of only talking about it. It’s understandable why people don’t open up more – being vulnerable is a huge risk and either pays off in crazy ways or leaves you wildly exposed and insecure. We are taught as a society to squash our dreams and that we are the rule not the exception. But what happens if we re-evaluate the golden rule? What happens if we start treating each other the way we want to be treated. What happens if we start believing that we are the exception and creating space for other’s to realize their dreams too?

As Alba and I volleyed back and forth with this topic, I realized that is why she and I connect so hard. Because we are both hell-bent on creating something different, disrupting the status quo, approaching things from a new angle – all in the name of making people feel safe, loved and included. I’ve said it a million times but I’ll say it again, there is truly enough room for all of us in every industry and the sooner we start believing that, the sooner we will start to see changes. I believe these small changes will ultimately impact our society in a meaningful way, do you?
